Dreaming Peace Together: Israelis and Palestinians Show Courage Amid Conflict

In a time marked by conflict and division, some refuse to give up. Representatives from over eighty Israeli-Palestinian organizations gathered in Tel Aviv for the third 'People Peace Summit,' insisting that the current ceasefire must be the last war. The coalition 'It's time' unites Jews and Arabs, Israelis and Palestinians, bound by a common dream: peace. Not an abstract peace, but one grounded in justice and mutual rights.

Dreaming Peace Together: Israelis and Palestinians Show Courage Amid Conflict

As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers, following the example of Jesus who broke down the dividing wall (Ephesians 2:14). Scripture reminds us: 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God' (Matthew 5:9, NIV).

The Path to Peace: Challenges and Opportunities

The summit takes place at a critical moment: less than six months before Israeli elections on October 27, and the current government is the most right-wing in Israel's history. Yet the organizers are not discouraged. Raluca Ganea, founder of Zazim, an Arab-Jewish civic movement, states: 'Peace does not mature overnight; it requires a process. We are determined to carry it forward, with patience and determination.'

The first step is to show the public that there is a broad sector mobilized for peace. Not a vague concept, but a political agreement that ends the occupation and allows for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. 'There can be no stable Middle East without a just solution to the Palestinian question,' Ganea emphasizes.

The Role of Civil Society

Civil society is often the first to pay the price of conflict, but also the most resilient in building bridges. Organizations like Zazim, Standing Together, and others work daily to foster dialogue and cooperation. The summit featured dialogues, performances, and conferences to engage a wide audience.

The Psalmist invites us to 'seek peace and pursue it' (Psalm 34:14, NIV). This is a task for every believer, wherever they are.

A Christian Perspective on Peace

The Bible is no stranger to conflict, but it offers a vision of reconciliation. In Christ, God reconciled the world to Himself (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). As ambassadors of reconciliation, we are called to bring hope even in the most difficult situations.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict touches deep chords for Christians, who see the Holy Land as the cradle of their faith. Praying for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6) is not optional but a spiritual commitment.

A Call to Action

While the world often looks on with resignation, 'It's time' reminds us that change is possible. Each of us can contribute: by informing ourselves, praying, supporting peace organizations, and promoting dialogue in our own communities.

The prophet Isaiah announces a time when 'they will beat their swords into plowshares' (Isaiah 2:4, NIV). That time can begin today, if we have the courage to dream and act.

Let us reflect: what can we do, in our own small way, to be instruments of peace? Peace is not just a dream, but a responsibility that God entrusts to us.
