In recent years, a growing number of young Chinese people have been consulting horoscopes, palm readers, and other forms of divination. This trend reflects a deep-seated search for meaning and control in a rapidly changing society. Economic pressures, social expectations, and personal anxieties often drive individuals to seek answers beyond the material world. For many, fortunetelling offers a sense of reassurance and direction when the future feels uncertain.
Gigi, a Chinese Christian now living in Australia, recalls her own fascination with star signs and fortunetellers before she came to faith. She found horoscopes eerily accurate in describing her personality and emotions. Her mother, anxious about her future, took her to multiple fortunetellers who made specific predictions about her life, including that her husband would die young. Years later, after Gigi became a Christian and moved to Australia, her husband passed away suddenly at 48, leaving her to grapple with the weight of those old prophecies.
Gigi’s story is not unique. Many Chinese Christians and non-Christians alike dabble in astrology, fortune-telling, and other mystical practices. Some view it as harmless curiosity, while others genuinely seek guidance for major life decisions. However, Christian leaders in China and the diaspora warn that these practices can open doors to spiritual confusion and undermine trust in God.
The Biblical Perspective on Divination
The Bible is clear in its stance against divination and fortune-telling. In Deuteronomy 18:9–12, God commands the Israelites:
“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.” (NIV)
This passage makes it clear that God’s people are to rely on Him alone for guidance and not on forbidden practices. The reason is not that God is withholding good information, but that these practices often lead people away from trusting in His sovereignty. When we seek control through occult means, we subtly reject God’s role as the ultimate authority over our lives.
Gigi now understands this truth. As she wrestled with grief, she turned to God in honesty and found that He used her pain to draw her closer to Him. She no longer puts her faith in fortunetellers, knowing that God alone holds her future.
Why Fortunetelling Appeals to the Human Heart
Despite biblical warnings, the allure of fortunetelling persists. Why? Because it addresses a universal human longing: the desire to know what lies ahead and to feel some measure of control over our lives. In a world of economic instability, political uncertainty, and personal challenges, the promise of a glimpse into the future can be very tempting.
Historically, Chinese culture has a long tradition of using astrology and divination for everything from harvest forecasts to military strategy. This cultural backdrop makes it easier for young people to view these practices as harmless traditions rather than spiritual compromises. Many see them as a form of entertainment or self-reflection, not as a religious act.
However, the line between curiosity and dependence can blur. When people start making important decisions based on horoscopes or palm readings, they may inadvertently give these practices authority over their lives. Christians are called to place their trust in God alone, seeking His will through prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel.
Hope and Redemption: The Gospel as the True Source of Guidance
For those who have been caught in the web of divination, there is good news. The gospel offers a relationship with the living God, who invites us to bring our anxieties to Him. Jesus said,
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34, ESV)
Instead of seeking secret knowledge, Christians are encouraged to trust in God’s providence. The Apostle Paul reminds us that God works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). This does not mean we will have all the answers, but it does mean we can have peace in the midst of uncertainty.
Many Chinese Christians, like Gigi, have found that their past involvement with fortunetelling actually deepens their appreciation for God’s grace. They understand the emptiness of seeking control through occult means and now point others to the true source of hope.
Practical Steps for Christians Navigating This Issue
If you or someone you know is struggling with the pull of fortunetelling, here are some steps to consider:
- Recognize the root need. The desire to know the future often stems from fear or anxiety. Bring these fears to God in prayer and ask for His peace.
- Immerse yourself in Scripture. The Bible is full of promises about God’s guidance. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (NIV).
- Seek godly counsel. Instead of consulting a fortuneteller, talk to a trusted pastor or mature Christian friend who can pray with you and offer biblical wisdom.
- Repent and turn away. If you have been involved in divination, confess it to God and ask for His forgiveness. He is faithful to cleanse us (1 John 1:9).
Reflection: Where Do You Seek Guidance?
Take a moment to consider: In times of uncertainty, where do you turn first? Do you find yourself checking horoscopes, seeking signs, or worrying about the future? Or do you bring your concerns to the One who holds all things in His hands?
God invites us to cast all our anxieties on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). He is not a distant deity who leaves us to figure things out on our own. Through prayer, His Word, and the community of believers, He provides the guidance we need.
May we learn to trust Him more deeply, knowing that our future is secure in His love.
