With a spirit of prayer and discernment, the Episcopal Conference of Chile has begun its 133rd Plenary Assembly. This important gathering, which brings together the shepherds of the various dioceses across the country, commenced with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio, thus manifesting unity with the See of Peter. In these days of work, the bishops seek to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit to respond to the current challenges facing Chilean society, always guided by the Gospel and the teaching of the Church.

Chilean Bishops Gather to Address Social Challenges Through Faith

From the very beginning, the prelates expressed their communion and support for Pope León XIV, who since his election in May 2025 has continued the call to peace and justice that characterizes the Petrine ministry. As the president of the episcopal conference recalled, the Church in Chile walks in harmony with the successor of Peter, conscious that its mission transcends political and ideological divisions to proclaim the Good News to all.

In a world marked by conflict and polarization, the message of unity that springs from these episcopal gatherings is especially significant. The bishops, as shepherds of God's people, have the responsibility to guide with wisdom and courage, recalling the words of Jesus:

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27, NIV).

Three Urgent Pastoral Challenges

Seeking Security with a Human Face

One of the central themes of this assembly is security, understood not simply as the absence of violence, but as conditions that allow for the integral development of individuals and communities. The bishops reflect on how the Church can contribute to building a society where everyone feels protected and valued, especially the most vulnerable. Authentic security is born from respect for the dignity of each person, created in the image and likeness of God.

In this context, the shepherds consider concrete proposals for accompanying communities affected by insecurity, always from a perspective that integrates justice with mercy. As Scripture states:

"Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness" (James 3:18, NIV).
True security flourishes when we cultivate relationships based on mutual respect and solidarity.

Migration: Welcome and Fraternity

The reality of migration represents another important axis of reflection for the Chilean bishops. Faced with the displacement of people seeking better living conditions, the Church remembers its call to be a home and family for all, especially for foreigners. The consistent teaching of the Church, continued by Pope León XIV, insists that every migrant is a bearer of dignity and rights that must be respected.

The prelates examine how Christian communities can offer a genuine welcome that goes beyond material assistance to include social and spiritual integration. This accompaniment is inspired by the biblical mandate:

"And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt" (Deuteronomy 10:19, NIV).
Christian hospitality transforms casual encounters into opportunities for grace.

An Economy at the Service of the Person

The country's economic situation also occupies a prominent place in the episcopal deliberations. The bishops analyze how the principles of the Church's Social Doctrine can illuminate economic decisions so that they are truly at the service of the common good. In a world where the market sometimes seems to impose its own laws, the Church reminds us that the economy must be subordinate to human dignity.

This perspective calls for an economy that prioritizes people over profit, ensuring that the most marginalized are not left behind. The bishops emphasize the need for ethical frameworks in business and governance, rooted in the Gospel values of justice, solidarity, and care for creation. They invite all sectors of society to collaborate in building an economic system that reflects God's love for every human being, fostering environments where families can thrive and communities can flourish in peace.
