Each year, during the first week of May, priests from eastern Bolivia have a special appointment. This 2026, from May 4 to 8, the Permanent Formation Encounter for the Clergy of Eastern Bolivia will take place in the Archdiocese of Santa Cruz. Under the theme "A Priestly Faithfulness That Generates a Future," the event will bring together pastors from different jurisdictions to strengthen their vocations and deepen their holistic formation.
The chosen location is Ciudad de la Alegría, in the Plan 3,000 neighborhood, a community born in 1983 after a natural disaster left thousands of families homeless. Today, that same place is a symbol of hope and renewal, perfect for priests to reflect on their calling and service.
What Will Happen During These Days?
Over four days, participants will share moments of formation, spirituality, and fraternity. There will be workshops, conferences, prayer, daily Eucharist, fellowship, and even sports activities. Everything is designed so that priests feel accompanied and strengthened in their ministry.
One of the central topics will be the relationship between the Church and the State, as well as the legal situation of ecclesiastical institutions. Attorney Tito López will guide this reflection. Also addressed will be priestly joy, led by Father Diego Pla, and vocational promotion as a permanent commitment of the ministry.
Fraternity and Community
Monsignor Fernando Bascopé will lead a session on community life and priestly fraternity. Father Juan Pablo Moreno will teach techniques for developing effective pastoral plans. And to close with a cultural touch, Father Hugo Ara, Vicar of Communication, will direct a priestly cinema session.
All of this, framed in prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist, which is the center of Christian life. As Scripture says:
"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20, NIV).
The Importance of Ongoing Formation
The encounter has become a key space for the integral renewal of priestly ministry. It is not only about acquiring knowledge, but about strengthening the coherence between personal life and pastoral service. Constancy, dedication, and faithfulness are pillars that build a Church with vision and hope.
This year, participation is expected from priests of several jurisdictions: the Archdiocese of Santa Cruz, the Diocese of San Ignacio de Velasco, and the Apostolic Vicariates of Beni, Camiri, Pando, Ñuflo de Chávez, and Reyes. It is a unique opportunity to share experiences and learn from one another.
Final Reflection
Dear reader, ongoing formation is not only for priests. All Christians are called to grow in our faith. How can you deepen your relationship with God? Perhaps you can join a Bible study group, attend spiritual retreats, or simply dedicate more time to prayer. Remember the words of the apostle Paul:
"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15, NIV).
May this gathering of priests also inspire in you a desire for renewal and commitment to your faith. God bless you!
