These days, the evangelical community in the Valencian region is experiencing a significant period of reflection and renewal. Recently, the Autonomous Evangelical Council of the Valencian Community (CECVA) held its annual assembly, a gathering that has marked the beginning of a leadership transition process. As believers, we know that times of change can be opportunities to seek God's direction and renew our commitment to His work.
The assembly unfolded in a spirit of fellowship and discernment, bringing together representatives from various congregations. In these moments of gathering, we recall the words of the apostle Paul:
"For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others." (Romans 12:4-5, NIV)This biblical truth reminds us of the importance of every believer and every congregation in the body of Christ.
Outcomes and Decisions from the Annual Assembly
During the meeting, representatives from member churches had the opportunity to evaluate the work done and make important decisions for the future. Several members of the board of directors were confirmed in their roles, recognizing their service and commitment to the Valencian Christian community. Among them are the treasurer and several regional representatives, who will continue to contribute with their gifts and abilities.
One of the most significant moments was the election of a new Culture Advisor, a role that takes on special importance in times when the Christian faith is in constant dialogue with contemporary society. This appointment reflects the importance of maintaining an active and thoughtful Christian presence in the cultural spaces of our community.
However, the assembly also faced complex decisions. Representatives considered the possibility of authorizing the creation of provincial evangelical councils, but after a time of discernment, they decided not to proceed with this initiative at the present time. These decisions, made collectively, show the seriousness with which the community approaches its organizational structure.
Leadership in Transition and the Path Forward
One of the most notable aspects of this assembly was the process of electing the president. Francisco Javier Piquer, who had served in this position since 2018, did not receive the necessary votes to continue, despite no other candidates being presented. In situations like these, we can remember that leadership in the church is always subject to community discernment and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The assembly wisely decided to appoint Piquer as acting president while preparing an extraordinary assembly for June 27, 2026. This interim period allows valuable time for reflection, prayer, and the search for new candidates who can serve the community. As Scripture teaches us:
"Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me." (John 12:26, NIV)
The acting president has announced that he will convene the board of directors to receive nominations for both the presidency and the position of First Representative of Alicante, which also became vacant. This process of search and discernment is fundamental for the future of the council and, by extension, for the evangelical witness in the Valencian Community.
The Spiritual Significance of Times of Change
Times of transition in church leadership always invite us to deepen our dependence on God. When the apostles faced moments of uncertainty, they turned to prayer and sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In our own context, these periods of change remind us that the church is not merely a human institution but a living body guided by Christ. As we navigate these transitions, we are called to trust in God's providence, remembering that He works through both times of stability and seasons of renewal to accomplish His purposes among His people.
