Dear brothers and sisters, in this time of reflection and prayer, we are invited to rediscover the value of community prayer. The Church, as the body of Christ, unites as one heart and one soul to intercede before the Lord. The tradition of the novena, nine days of intense prayer, reminds us of the disciples' waiting in the upper room before Pentecost. It is a privileged moment to ask for the grace of conversion and unity.
This year, as the Church is guided by Pope Leo XIV, successor to Pope Francis who passed away on April 21, 2025, we are called to pray for all those who are far from the faith. Prayer has the power to break down walls of division and open hearts to God's love. As Christians, let us never forget that our Lord Jesus Christ prayed for the unity of his disciples (John 17:21).
The novena we propose is an invitation to all believers, regardless of their church affiliation, to join in a chorus of supplication. Each day, for nine days, we will recite prayers that help us meditate on the life of Saint Joseph, a model of silence and obedience. He, the guardian of the Holy Family, intercedes for us before the throne of God.
Saint Joseph: Example of Faith and Work
The figure of Saint Joseph is central in Christian spirituality. A righteous man, as the evangelist Matthew defines him (Matthew 1:19), he knew how to welcome the mystery of God into his life with humility and courage. His silent 'yes' allowed the Word to become flesh and dwell among us. In a world that often exalts appearance and success, Saint Joseph teaches us the greatness of humility and service.
The feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, celebrated on May 1, reminds us of the dignity of human work. Work is not only a means of livelihood but a participation in God's creative work. Saint Joseph, a carpenter from Nazareth, sanctified daily work with his presence and dedication. In this time of crisis and unemployment, we can ask for his intercession for all those seeking dignified work.
Prayer to Saint Joseph is an ancient and precious tradition. As Scripture reminds us: 'May the Lord bless the work of your hands' (Psalm 90:17). We entrust our labors and hopes to him, confident that he watches over us as he watched over Jesus and Mary.
Conversion of Heart: A Gift to Ask Persistently
Conversion is not a one-time event but a daily journey. Each day we are called to turn our gaze to God and let ourselves be transformed by his love. The prayer of the novena helps us persevere on this journey, not to tire of asking for the grace of conversion for ourselves and others.
In particular, many Christians feel the desire to pray for the conversion of those involved in movements or associations far from the faith. Freemasonry, for example, has been a concern for the Church. However, our attitude should not be one of condemnation but of prayer and mercy. As Jesus teaches: 'Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy' (Matthew 5:7).
Prayer for the conversion of Freemasons is not an act of hostility but of love. We desire that all men and women may know the saving truth, which is Jesus Christ. The Church, as a mother, prays for all her children, even for those who have strayed. In this spirit, we recite the novena with faith and hope.
