In eastern Ukraine, where war brings daily suffering and destruction, a moving rescue recently took place. A 77-year-old woman named Antonina, who had lived for decades in the city of Lyman in the Donbas, was forced to flee as Russian troops advanced. Her home of 53 years had been destroyed by shelling. Completely alone, she set out on foot to reach her family.

77-Year-Old Ukrainian Rescued by Ground Robot: 'I Prayed Without Stopping'

Ukrainian drone pilots spotted the elderly woman during a reconnaissance mission on a screen. They watched as she walked slowly, bent over and leaning on two sticks, along a lonely country road—a picture of vulnerability in the midst of war. Without hesitation, they deployed a remote-controlled ground robot to rescue her. On the vehicle they attached a blanket with the words: 'Grandma, get in!'

The rescue journey took several hours and passed through a contested area under constant fire. The pilot steered the robot from a safe distance and finally brought Antonina to a place where her son and daughter-in-law were waiting. The joy and relief were indescribable.

Faith as a Support in the Greatest Need

In a subsequent interview, Antonina said she prayed throughout the entire ride. 'I cried so much, I prayed every prayer I knew,' she said. In her utter loneliness and fear, faith was her only anchor. This experience recalls the words of the Apostle Paul: 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God' (Philippians 4:6, NIV).

Antonina's story shows how prayer can provide strength and comfort in extreme situations. She trusted that God had not abandoned her—and her rescue was a sign of His care.

The Role of Technology in Loving Our Neighbor

This rescue also raises questions: Can modern technologies like drones and robots be used for humanitarian purposes? From a Christian perspective, any means that helps save lives and alleviate suffering is an expression of neighborly love. Jesus himself taught: 'Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me' (Matthew 25:40, NIV). The drone pilots did exactly that—they saw the need of an old woman and acted immediately.

Of course, technology remains just a tool. What matters is the human motivation behind it. In this case, it was compassion and the will to help that made the rescue possible.

What Does the Bible Say About Fear and Trust in Times of Crisis?

Antonina's story is an example of the primal power of prayer. The Bible is full of promises that God hears the prayers of the distressed. Psalm 34:18 says: 'The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit' (ESV). For many Christians in war zones, this verse becomes a lived reality.

At the same time, the Bible teaches that we should not be paralyzed by fear. Isaiah 41:10 encourages: 'Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand' (ESV).

Antonina could have given up, but she fought—not only physically, but also spiritually through prayer. Her trust in God helped her overcome fear and not lose hope.

Practical Application: How Can We Pray and Act for Those Affected?

Antonina's story calls us not only to pray but also to take action. Many Christians worldwide support humanitarian organizations working in Ukraine.
