About Salisbury Cathedral
📜 History
Salisbury Cathedral was founded on April 28, 1220, when the bishopric moved from the ancient fortress of Old Sarum to the Avon River valley. The foundation stones were laid by William Longespée, third Earl of Salisbury, and Ela de Salisbury. Bishop Richard Poore oversaw the initial construction, with Elias de Dereham as the cathedral's canon and works coordinator. The main nave, transept, and choir were completed in 1258, the year it was consecrated by Bishop Giles of Bridport. The western facade was finished in 1265, and the tower with its spire was completed around 1320, so the main construction spanned approximately a century. In 1668, architect Christopher Wren designed reinforcement beams to counteract the deformation caused by the weight of the spire. In 1790, James Wyatt carried out significant restoration work, including the replacement of the choir screen. Between 1985 and 2023, an extensive exterior restoration program was carried out that consolidated the stone and restored the appearance of the walls.
🏛️ Architecture
The cathedral corresponds to the Early English Gothic style, with an unusual stylistic coherence resulting from having been built in a relatively brief period. Its spire measures 123 meters, the tallest of England's cathedrals. The total length of the building reaches 135 meters, with a nave of 71 meters. The construction used approximately 70,000 tons of stone, 3,000 tons of wood, and 450 tons of lead, all on foundations of only 1.2 meters deep, conditioned by the high water table of the land. The interior walls combine Chilmark grey stone with Purbeck marble columns, creating a visual contrast characteristic of the nave. The floor plan adopts a double Latin cross. The chapter house, built in 1263, is octagonal in shape and rests on a single central column; its medieval frieze depicts scenes from Genesis and Exodus. The cloister was added in 1240. The western facade has more than 130 niches, 73 of which contain statues. In the nave, a medieval clock dated around 1386 is displayed, one of the oldest working clock mechanisms preserved in the world.
⭐ Key Facts
The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Salisbury, established in 1220. As the Anglican mother church of this region, it has played a central role in the religious life of southern England for eight centuries. Its chapter house houses one of the four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta of 1215, considered the best preserved of all of them. Elias de Dereham, present at Runnymede when the document was signed, was the one who transferred that copy to Salisbury. The cathedral precinct is the most extensive in Great Britain. The cathedral has been listed as a Grade I historic monument since February 28, 1952. Its library preserves 193 manuscripts, approximately 12,000 early printed books, and 43 incunabula. The landscape in which it is framed was immortalized by painter John Constable around 1825. The work inspired the novel The Spire by writer William Golding, and has served as an architectural reference for Ken Follett for the fictional cathedral in The Pillars of the Earth. In 2008, the 750th anniversary of its original consecration was celebrated, consolidating its place in the historical memory of the Anglican Church.
Salisbury Cathedral is located a few minutes from the historic city center, surrounded by one of the most extensive cathedral precincts in Great Britain. Visitors can tour the nave, view the original copy of the Magna Carta in the chapter house, ascend the 332 steps to the base of the spire, and admire the medieval clock displayed inside. The cathedral offers guided tours, regular Anglican religious services, and sacred music concerts throughout the year.
