About Saint Patricks Basilica

📜 History

The Basilica of Saint Patrick of Montreal was built to serve the city's Irish Catholic community. The cornerstone was laid in September 1843, under the design of architect P. L. Morin and the direction of Father Felix Martin. Construction concluded in 1847, and the first mass was celebrated on March 17 of that year, coinciding with the patronal feast of Saint Patrick. The total construction cost amounted to approximately one million dollars. Over the years, the church became established as the main spiritual center for the Irish community in Montreal. On December 10, 1985, it was declared a historical monument of the province of Quebec. In 1990 it received the designation of a National Historic Site of Canada, formally confirmed in 1996. On December 9, 1988, Pope John Paul II granted it the title of minor basilica through the decree Quæ Per Orbem, recognizing its value within the Catholic Church in North America.

🏛️ Architecture

The building follows the Neo-Gothic style, with a floor plan 71 meters long and 32 meters wide, and a bell tower reaching 69 meters in height. The project was designed by architect P. L. Morin and Father Felix Martin. The interior is distinguished by its 25-meter-high columns, carved from white oak and painted to imitate marble. It features three altars and four rose windows designed by Alex S. Locke. The walls house 150 oil paintings of saints. The pipe organ, manufactured by Casavant Frères in 1895 with electropneumatic action, is one of the most recognizable musical elements of the church. The bell tower contains ten bells known as the Bells of Saint Patrick; the oldest was cast in 1774. Inside, a sanctuary lamp installed in 1896, weighing approximately 816 kilograms, is preserved, flanked by six two-meter-tall angel figures.
