About Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica
📜 History
The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Ottawa has its origins in 1832, when a small wooden chapel dedicated to Saint James was erected in what was then the city of Bytown. In 1841, that structure was demolished to make way for a larger temple. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate assumed administration in 1844, and Father Pierre-Adrien Telmon redesigned the project adopting the Neo-Gothic style. The main structure was completed in 1846. In 1847, Bytown was elevated to an episcopal see and Joseph-Bruno Guigues was named first bishop. On March 7, 1850, the first organ was inaugurated. In 1866, the twin towers that characterize the building's silhouette were added, and between 1876 and 1885 the interior decoration work was executed. In 1879, Pope Leo XIII granted the church the rank of minor basilica. In 1892, the sons of Joseph Casavant rebuilt the main organ. In 1990, the Canadian government declared it a National Historic Site.
🏛️ Architecture
The building combines Neoclassical elements in the lower volumes with Neo-Gothic treatment in the upper areas, a synthesis that reflects the successive projects that shaped it. The original design by Antoine Robillard and Father John Francis Cannon was transformed by Father Pierre-Adrien Telmon starting in 1844. The twin spires, designed by Damase Dandurand and completed in 1866, are clad in tinplate, a common feature in Franco-Canadian churches of the time. The interior was intervened by James R. Bowes in 1875 and decorated by Georges Buillon. The choir houses thirty large wooden sculptures carved by Louis-Philippe Hébert, one of the leading Canadian sculptors of the 19th century. The nave has a capacity for 944 seated people, a figure that rises to 1,544 when the second-floor balcony is included. The building has two pipe organs: the main one, with 52 stops and three or more manual keyboards, and a choral organ with 17 stops. On the facade stands out a golden Virgin visible from Parliament Hill.
⭐ Key Facts
The basilica is the seat of the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall and one of the references of the religious heritage of eastern Canada. Its liturgical services are celebrated in French and in English, reflecting the bilingual character of the federal capital. In 1978, the municipality of Ottawa listed it under the Ontario Heritage Act, and in 1990 it was declared a National Historic Site of Canada. Throughout its history, the temple has been the scene of state funerals, including those of Governor General Georges Vanier and Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Christmas and Easter Masses are broadcast on national television, extending its reach beyond the local community. The granting of the rank of minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII in 1879 consolidated its position within the Catholic ecclesiastical hierarchy. Its location on Sussex Drive, facing Parliament Hill, places it at the institutional heart of the country.
The cathedral is located at 385 Sussex Drive, just a few meters from Parliament Hill. Its interior, with sculptures by Louis-Philippe Hébert and two pipe organs, offers visitors a journey through the history of Catholicism in Canada. The doors remain open both for the celebration of liturgical services in French and English and for contemplative visits. Those arriving from the opposite bank of the Ottawa River can recognize the silhouette of its twin towers, which have been illuminating the sky of the federal capital since 1866.
