About Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción de Puebla

📜 History

The authorization to build the cathedral was issued on January 18, 1531, by Queen Isabel of Portugal. The first church on the site was erected on August 29, 1535. Construction of the current temple began on November 18, 1575, under the initial direction of architect Francisco Becerra, who laid out the foundations following a five-nave floor plan. In 1634, Juan Gómez de Trasmonte resumed direction of the works. Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza vigorously promoted the construction from 1640 onward and presided over the consecration of the temple on April 18, 1649, four years before the Mexico City Cathedral, which was consecrated in 1653. Throughout the following centuries, significant elements were incorporated: in 1772, the red and black marble floor known as Santo Tomás marble was installed, and in 1819, the neoclassical main altar designed by Manuel Tolsá was completed. The temple holds the rank of Minor Basilica and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles.

🏛️ Architecture

The temple features a predominantly Herrerian style, with Baroque elements and a Renaissance facade. Its floor plan adopts the shape of a Greek cross with five naves: a central one, two lateral ones, and two chapel naves. The interior is articulated by 14 colossal Doric columns approximately 15 meters high, and the roof is distributed across 40 vaults and two main domes, with a total of 39 domes including those of the chapels. The dimensions of the complex are: 97.67 meters in total length, 51 meters in width, and 74 meters in height to the top of the towers, which individually reach 70 meters. The main materials are gray stone extracted from nearby quarries and red and black marble for the floor, installed in 1772. Among the pieces of greatest artistic value are the Altar of the Kings, in the Solomonic Baroque style, with turned columns and a canvas by Cristóbal de Villalpando painted in 1688, and the Altar of the Cypress, in the neoclassical style, completed in 1819 and designed by Manuel Tolsá, who also created the two-meter-tall bronze sculpture of the Immaculate Conception. The choir houses three historic organs, the largest of which was installed in the first half of the 18th century.

⭐ Key Facts

The cathedral is part of the Historic Center of Puebla, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed as a National Historic Monument with the number M-21-242-00-00. Its consecration in 1649, prior to that of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico, established it as a primary ecclesiastical reference in New Spain. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, whose patronal feast is celebrated on December 8. The temple preserves collections of painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, silver ornaments, sacred vessels, reliquaries, and ecclesiastical vestments embroidered in gold and silver, documenting four centuries of New Spanish artistic production. The bell named María, weighing over eight tons and raised to the north tower in 1732, has been part of the sound and visual landscape of downtown Puebla for nearly three centuries.

Visiting the Cathedral Basilica of Puebla is to approach nearly five centuries of Mexico's ecclesiastical and artistic history. Its gray stone naves, vaults, Baroque and neoclassical altars, and historic organs offer an experience that combines devotion with contemplation of New Spanish heritage. The temple is located on the south side of the Puebla zócalo, in the heart of the Historic Center declared a World Heritage Site, accessible from any point in the city center.
