About Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Medellín

📜 History

The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Medellín has its origins in the ecclesiastical decree of February 8, 1871, which authorized the construction of a new temple for the city. The first stone was blessed on February 9, 1875, although the works faced prolonged interruptions between 1876 and 1889 due to political conflicts and structural design problems. An initial proposal by the Italian architect Filippo Crosti, presented in 1874, was discarded before the definitive phase began. Construction firmly resumed on January 19, 1890, when the plans by the French architect Charles Émile Carré were adopted. In 1897, the first sacristy was blessed and used provisionally as a chapel. On September 7, 1928, a fire affected the premises. After four decades of continuous work, the temple was consecrated on August 12, 1931. On June 12, 1948, Pope Pius XII granted it the title of Minor Basilica. In 1982, it was proposed as a National Monument, and on December 1, 2004, it received the declaration of a National Cultural Interest Asset by the Colombian government.

🏛️ Architecture

The cathedral's design follows the Neo-Romanesque style, with a Latin cross plan formed by three longitudinal naves and a transept. The original plans were drawn up by the French architect Charles Émile Carré between 1889 and 1890; after his death, the construction management passed to Heliodoro Ochoa and later to Salvador Ortiz. The interior ornamental design was the responsibility of the Italian Giovanni Buscaglione. The central nave measures 98.45 meters in length and 14.50 meters in width, and the two bell towers reach 53.20 meters in height. The floor area is 4,608 m², and the total built area is 7,300 m². The structure is built on stone foundations; the walls use approximately 1,120,000 solid bricks of eight cubic decimeters each, joined with lime mortar, and the interior framework is made of wood. The complex includes four bronze bells located in the eastern tower, a pipe organ, and multiple altars. The stained glass windows and liturgical pieces were made by specialized European houses, including Maumejean, Poussielgue-Rusand, and Rambusch.

⭐ Key Facts

The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Medellín and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The title of Minor Basilica, conferred by Pope Pius XII in 1948, recognizes its position as a liturgical center of the first hierarchy within the Colombian Catholic Church. Its declaration as a National Cultural Interest Asset in 2004 incorporates it into the country's protected architectural heritage. Inside, there is a religious art museum that preserves approximately forty paintings and fifteen sculptures from different periods. The temple also houses the Bishops' Pantheon and a crypt with an ossuary, where relevant figures from the ecclesiastical history of Antioquia rest. Its location facing Bolívar Park, in the historic center of Medellín, makes it an urban landmark and a frequent destination for both the faithful and those interested in Colombia's historical heritage. The most attended liturgical celebrations take place around the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8.

The premises remain open to those who wish to contemplate its Neo-Romanesque architecture, visit the religious art museum, or participate in liturgical celebrations. Its location facing Bolívar Park, in the heart of Medellín, facilitates access from various points in the historic center. The artworks preserved inside and the scale of its construction offer a concrete perspective on the religious and cultural history of Antioquia.
