About Capel Cwrt
📖 About this Christian tradition
The Presbyterian Church is one of the major branches of Reformed Christianity, born of the sixteenth-century Reformation and rooted in particular in the work of John Calvin in Geneva and John Knox in Scotland. From that common stem grew national churches that spread through England, Ireland, the Netherlands, North America, and, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, much of Latin America, Asia and Africa. Today Presbyterian churches gather tens of millions of believers in denominations such as the PCUSA and the PCA in the United States, CIPRES in Mexico, the IPI and the IPB in Brazil, and the Presbyterian Church of Chile.
Presbyterian faith is confessed under the principles of the Reformation: Sola Scriptura, Sola Gratia and Sola Fide. Its best-known doctrinal reference is the Westminster Confession of Faith (1647), accompanied by the Larger Catechism and the Shorter Catechism, documents that articulate the teaching on God, salvation by grace, providence and the Christian life. This tradition identifies with Reformed theology, also called Calvinist, which emphasizes the sovereignty of God and the centrality of grace.
What is distinctive about Presbyterianism, however, is not only doctrinal but also a matter of governance: the local church is shepherded by a session or consistory, made up of ruling elders elected by the congregation together with the pastor or teaching elder. Several churches are grouped into presbyteries, and presbyteries into synods or a general assembly. This model, neither episcopal nor purely congregational, seeks to balance shared authority with mutual accountability among congregations.
🕯️ Feast days, calendar and devotions
The Presbyterian calendar is more sober than that of episcopal or Catholic traditions, but it preserves the great seasons of the Christian year. The Lord's Day, Sunday, is the weekly feast par excellence, devoted to worship, the preaching of the Word and, often monthly or quarterly, the celebration of the Lord's Supper. Advent and Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Easter are observed in most congregations, as is Pentecost, although there is no calendar of saints as such.
A date of strong identity is Reformation Day, October 31, which recalls Luther's 95 Theses and the rediscovery of the gospel by the Reformed churches; in many congregations it is marked by special services, conferences and readings from the Westminster Confession. Presbyterian piety is markedly biblical and communal: Sunday worship, weekday Bible study, family prayer and congregational singing—traditionally of psalms and hymns—occupy the place that devotions to saints or images hold in other traditions.
⛪ How to prepare for a visit
Presbyterian worship is usually held on Sunday morning and, in many churches, also at evening. It lasts between sixty and ninety minutes and revolves around the reading and expository preaching of the Bible, accompanied by prayers, confession of sin, recitation of the creed, the offering and congregational song. If you arrive for the first time, it helps to introduce yourself at the door: nearly every congregation has a welcome team that hands out the order of service and orients visitors.
Dress is simple and respectful, with no formal dress code in most cases. Anyone may attend and take part in the readings, hymns and prayers; the Lord's Supper, however, is usually reserved for those who have made a profession of faith and are members of a Christian church, according to each congregation's practice. There is no obligation to give to the offering or to follow a specific ritual: what is valued is attentive listening to the Word and a sincere disposition of heart.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Where does the Presbyterian Church come from?
It was born of the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, especially the Reformed theology of John Calvin in Geneva and the ecclesial organization led by John Knox in Scotland around 1560. From there it spread through Europe, North America and, later, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
How does Presbyterian governance differ from other models?
Unlike the episcopal model—where bishops govern—and the congregational model—where the local assembly is sovereign—Presbyterian churches are governed by elders elected by the congregation. Several churches form a presbytery, and presbyteries form a synod or general assembly, combining local autonomy with shared accountability.
Why do they baptize young children?
Presbyterian churches recognize two sacraments: baptism and the Lord's Supper. They baptize both adults who profess the faith and the children of believers, understanding baptism as the sign of the covenant of grace. In this they differ from Baptist churches, which baptize only those who make a personal profession of faith.
What is the Westminster Confession of Faith?
It is the principal doctrinal document of Presbyterianism, drafted in London between 1643 and 1647 by an assembly of theologians. It summarizes Reformed teaching on Scripture, God, creation, salvation, the church and the sacraments, and is accompanied by the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, still used today for the formation of members.
What can I expect at a Presbyterian worship service?
You will find an orderly service centered on the Word: Scripture readings, expository preaching, prayers, the recitation of a creed or confession, congregational singing and, on certain dates, the Lord's Supper. The atmosphere is sober and welcoming, without images or elaborate rituals, and visitors are received with simplicity.
