About Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
📜 History
The religious significance of Cerro del Tepeyac dates back to 1531, when, according to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the converted indigenous man Juan Diego. Following these apparitions, successive religious constructions were erected at the foot of the hill. In 1695, the construction of the first major temple on the site began, which opened its doors in 1709 under the name Antigua Basílica. In 1749, it was elevated to the status of a collegiate church, and in 1904 Pope Pius X granted it the title of minor basilica. By the 1970s, sinking problems caused by the clay soil of the ancient lacustrine zone led to the decision to build a new enclosure. The Nueva Basílica was built between 1974 and 1976, and on October 12 of that year, the image of the Virgin was transferred to the new temple. Between 1979 and 2000, an extensive restoration project of the Antigua Basílica was carried out using hydraulic jacks and concrete piles to stabilize the historic structure.
🏛️ Architecture
The architectural complex of Tepeyac houses two temples of clearly differentiated styles. The Antigua Basílica, completed in 1709 according to the design of architect Pedro de Arrieta, follows the Plateresque Baroque style and features four octagonal towers at its corners clad with Talavera tiles in yellow and blue tones. Its interior was modified in later periods with Neoclassical additions. The Nueva Basílica, built between 1974 and 1976, was designed by architects José Luis Benlliure, Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, and Gabriel Chávez de la Mora, among other collaborators. Its circular floor plan is conceived as a symbolic reference to the tent that housed the Ark of the Covenant, and it was erected on 344 control piles to ensure the stability of the subsoil. The main materials are reinforced concrete and a copper roof. The circular arrangement allows all the faithful to maintain direct visibility of the image of the Virgin, suspended above the main altar. The capacity of the enclosure exceeds ten thousand standing people.
⭐ Key Facts
The Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe is the most visited Marian shrine in the world, with approximately twenty million pilgrims per year. The date of greatest attendance is December 12, the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, when around nine million faithful from Mexico and other countries converge at the site. Guadalupan devotion has its roots in 1531, the year Juan Diego received the apparitions at Tepeyac. The image he presented to Bishop Juan de Zumárraga is preserved in the main altar of the Nueva Basílica and constitutes the center of Marian veneration in Latin America. The Tepeyac site was also a sacred place for pre-Hispanic cultures, and devotion to the Virgin of Guadalupe has played a central role in the construction of Mexican national identity since the colonial era. On July 31, 2002, Pope John Paul II canonized Juan Diego at the Tepeyac site itself.
Tepeyac is a meeting point between the history, faith, and culture of Mexico. Those who visit the complex can contemplate the image of the Virgin in the Nueva Basílica, walk through the gardens of the atrium, and see the Antigua Basílica, a testament to more than three centuries of construction history. The site remains open every day of the year, with the greatest influx around December 12. It is located in the north of Mexico City, accessible from the city center by public transportation.
