Epiphany: The Story of the Magi and How to Celebrate

Fuente: EncuentraIglesias Editorial

Epiphany, celebrated on January 6, is a significant day in the Christian calendar. It commemorates the visit of the Magi—wise men from the East—who followed a star to find the newborn Jesus and worship him. Also known as Three Kings' Day, it marks the revelation of God in Christ to all nations. For many believers, it is a day of rest, family, and spiritual renewal.

Epiphany: The Story of the Magi and How to Celebrate

In many parts of the world, especially in Latin America and Europe, Epiphany is celebrated with unique customs. Children eagerly await gifts from the Magi, and families share a special cake or bread. This day reminds us that God's love is for everyone, not just a select few.

Epiphany invites us to reflect on our own search for God. The Magi represent all who sincerely seek truth and find it in Jesus. In a busy world, this day can be a quiet oasis to focus on what truly matters: the love of God made visible in Christ.

The Biblical Account: The Wise Men from the East

The only biblical account of the Magi is in the Gospel of Matthew: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him’” (Matthew 2:1-2, NIV).

The Magi brought gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Each has deep symbolic meaning: gold signifies Jesus' royalty, frankincense his divinity, and myrrh his suffering and death. This story shows that Jesus came for all people—a message of hope and God's universal love.

Over time, tradition named the Magi Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. Though the Bible does not specify their number, three became customary because of the three gifts. Epiphany is a celebration of the breadth of Christian faith.

Traditions Around the World

Star Singing (Sternsingen)

In Germany and other European countries, children dressed as the Magi go door to door singing carols and collecting for charity. They write the blessing “C+M+B” (Christus mansionem benedicat—Christ bless this house) above doorways. This tradition combines faith with community service.

Three Kings Cake

In many cultures, a special cake or bread is baked with a small figurine hidden inside. The person who finds it is considered king or queen for the day and often hosts a party on Candlemas (February 2). This sweet tradition brings families together.

Church Services

Many churches hold special services on Epiphany, reading the story of the Magi and reflecting on its meaning. Hymns like “We Three Kings” are sung, and some congregations perform nativity plays. It is a day to thank God for revealing himself to all people.

Epiphany calls us to pause and contemplate the mystery of God becoming human. It is a time to renew our faith and share the joy of knowing that God is with us.
