About Washington National Cathedral

📜 History

The United States Congress granted the founding charter to the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation on January 6, 1893, authorizing the construction of a cathedral in the nation's capital. The cornerstone was laid on September 29, 1907 in a ceremony attended by President Theodore Roosevelt and more than 20,000 people. In 1912, the Bethlehem Chapel opened for worship, while work continued on the rest of the building. The construction project spanned 83 years, with the involvement of several architects over the decades. The final stone was placed on September 29, 1990 during a ceremony presided over by President George H. W. Bush. The cathedral was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. On August 23, 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake damaged several pinnacles of the central tower and caused damage to buttresses and roofs, with repairs estimated at 25 million dollars that extended over several years.

🏛️ Architecture

The building follows the English Neo-Gothic style of the late 14th century. The British architect George Frederick Bodley developed the original master plan, although he died in 1907 without seeing his work completed. Henry Vaughan succeeded him and revised the design until his death in 1917. Philip Hubert Frohman assumed the main architectural direction from the postwar period until his death in 1972, being responsible for the definitive plans of the building. The cathedral measures 158 meters in length, 48 meters in width, and its Gloria in Excelsis Tower reaches 92 meters in height above ground level, being the highest point in the city of Washington. The main material is beige-toned Indiana limestone, used over traditional masonry with steel reinforcements limited to the roof trusses. The interior houses more than 200 stained glass windows, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses characteristic of the Gothic style. Among the decorative carvings on the exterior is a gargoyle inspired by the fictional character Darth Vader, located on the northeast tower. The complex occupies 57 acres of land on Mount Saint Alban.

⭐ Key Facts

The cathedral occupies a central place in the civic and religious life of the United States. As the seat of the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church and the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, it fulfills functions analogous to those of Westminster Abbey in the United Kingdom. In 1974 it was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout its history it has hosted state funerals for Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower (1969), Ronald Reagan (2004), Gerald Ford (2007), George H. W. Bush (2018), and Jimmy Carter (2025). Presidential prayer services following inaugurations have been held here from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Joe Biden. In 1968, the cathedral hosted the memorial service for Martin Luther King Jr. Queen Elizabeth II of England attended the dedication of the west rose window in 1977. In 2007, the American Institute of Architects ranked it third on its list of America's Favorite Architecture. Among the figures interred on the grounds are writer and activist Helen Keller and architect Philip H. Frohman.

The Washington National Cathedral welcomes visitors of all faiths throughout the year. Located on Mount Saint Alban, a short distance from the center of the federal capital, the temple offers guided tours that allow exploration of its chapels, historic tombs, and the great organ with more than 10,000 pipes. Prayer services are held daily, and the 53-bell carillon—cast in 1963 by John Taylor & Co. in England—accompanies liturgical moments with its ringing.
