About Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

📜 History

The construction of the cathedral began in 1163, when Bishop Maurice de Sully laid the first stone on March 24 of that year. The main works extended until 1345 and transformed the landscape of the Île de la Cité, in the heart of Paris. In 1182, the choir was already functional for religious worship. Throughout the centuries, the building was the scene of major historical events: in 1429, the coronation of Henry VI of England was celebrated inside it, and in 1804, on December 2, Napoleon Bonaparte proclaimed himself emperor. After the ravages of the French Revolution, which deconsecrated it between 1789 and 1802, the cathedral underwent an extensive restoration campaign between 1844 and 1867 under the direction of the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. On April 15, 2019, a fire destroyed two-thirds of the roof and collapsed the central spire. After five years of reconstruction work, the building was reopened to the public on December 7, 2024.

🏛️ Architecture

The cathedral is an example of transitional Gothic, combining the solidity of Norman Romanesque with structural innovations characteristic of classical Gothic. It measures 128 meters in length and 48 meters in width; its towers reach 69 meters in height, while the interior nave rises to 43 meters. The total surface area of the building is approximately 5,500 square meters and it has a capacity for 9,000 people. Among its most representative elements are the flying buttresses of the apse, developed in the 13th century as one of the first large-scale applications of this technique. The three rose windows—the western, northern, and southern—are references of French Gothic art. The Gallery of Kings houses 28 sculptures representing monarchs from the Old Testament. The medieval architects involved include Jean de Chelles, Pierre de Montreuil, and Pierre de Chelles. During the 19th-century restoration, Viollet-le-Duc redesigned the central spire, which reached 96 meters in height, and added the Gallery of Chimeras with its famous gargoyles.

⭐ Key Facts

The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Paris and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, under the patronage of Our Lady of Paris. Its treasury preserves relics acquired by King Louis IX in the 13th century: the Crown of Thorns, a fragment of the True Cross, and a nail from the Crucifixion. The historical ensemble to which it belongs—the banks of the Seine in Paris—was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. The novel by Victor Hugo published in 1831 revived public interest in the building and directly contributed to promoting the 19th-century restoration works. Throughout the centuries, the cathedral has inspired works by artists such as Matisse, Rousseau, Chagall, and Delacroix. As an active monument of Roman Catholicism, it continues to be a place of liturgical celebration, pilgrimage, and custody of some of the most venerated relics of Western Christianity.

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris stands on the Île de la Cité as a testament to eight centuries of religious and artistic history. After the devastation of the 2019 fire and the culmination of an unprecedented reconstruction process, the building reopened its doors in December 2024. Those who approach its naves find the silence characteristic of an active place of worship, the light filtered through the medieval rose windows, and the presence of some of the most venerated relics of Western Christianity.
