About Basílica Santuario Santa Rosa de Lima

📜 History

The sanctuary marks the birthplace of Isabel Flores de Oliva, who was born on April 30, 1586 in Lima. She entered the Third Order of Dominicans on August 10, 1606, adopting the name Rosa. After her death on August 24, 1617, veneration of her figure grew rapidly throughout America. Pope Clement X proclaimed her sainthood on April 12, 1671, making her the first saint of the American continent. In 1728, the current temple was built on the same site where she lived, preserving spaces linked to her daily and spiritual life. During the 20th century, the opening of Tacna Avenue affected the building, which lost approximately one third of its original structure, including its Baroque entrance. The surviving elements—the presbytery, the false transept, and part of the nave—were integrated into the resulting edifice. In 1972, the Peruvian state declared it a Cultural Heritage of the Nation, and in 1992 a comprehensive restoration was completed that consolidated its current configuration.

🏛️ Architecture

The sanctuary is an example of the Rococo style applied to colonial religious architecture in Lima. The current structure incorporates elements from the original 18th-century building: the presbytery, a false transept, and portions of the nave. The original main altarpiece remains in situ, being one of the most representative artistic testimonies of the interior. Among the preserved pieces is an image of the saint carved in cherry wood, dated around 1670, as well as 17th-century religious paintings. The complex includes spaces that were part of the family residence: a hermitage intended for personal prayer, rooms where the saint cared for the sick, and a well twenty meters deep where devotees deposit written petitions. The administration of the complex corresponds to the Order of Preachers, which also manages the associated convent. The original Baroque entrance was lost during the works to open Tacna Avenue. The sanctuary is located on the first block of that avenue, in the Historic Center of Lima, at coordinates 12°02′33″S 77°02′07″W.

⭐ Key Facts

The sanctuary occupies a central place in Catholic devotion in Peru and throughout Latin America. Saint Rose of Lima was the first person born in the American continent to be canonized by the Catholic Church, and since 1671 she has been the patron saint of America, the Philippines, and the West Indies. Her feast day is celebrated on August 30 with processions and acts of popular devotion in Lima and in other cities around the world. The complex is part of the Historic Center of Lima, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. The Peruvian state recognized it as a Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 1972. Throughout the centuries, the site has been a pilgrimage destination for faithful from different backgrounds, attracted by the spaces directly linked to the saint's life. Among the preserved devotional objects is a painting of the saint that Admiral Miguel Grau carried aboard the monitor Huáscar during the War of the Pacific, a testament to the profound mark of her figure on Peruvian history.

The sanctuary opens its doors to those who wish to walk through the same spaces where the first saint of America lived and prayed. Its rooms preserve furniture, altars, and images from the colonial period, and the well where generations of pilgrims have deposited their petitions remains the heart of the complex. Located in the Historic Center of Lima, it is accessible on foot from the main points of the historic district, under the care of the Dominican community that has preserved it since the 18th century.
