About Basílica Histórica de Nossa Senhora Aparecida

📜 History

The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida has its origin in October 1717, when three fishermen extracted from the Paraíba River a dark clay image dating from around 1650. In 1745, the first public chapel was erected on Morro dos Coqueiros to safeguard the image. With the increase in the faithful, in 1844 it was decided to demolish that temple to build a larger one. The works began in 1845 and concluded in 1888. On June 24, 1888, it was solemnly inaugurated by Dom Lino Deodato Rodrigues de Carvalho, bishop of São Paulo. On November 28, 1893, it obtained the category of Episcopal Sanctuary, and on October 12, 1894, it was declared a National Sanctuary by the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil. Pope Pius X granted it the title of Minor Basilica on April 29, 1908, and it was consecrated on September 5, 1909. On April 18, 1982, CONDEPHAAT inscribed it in the register of historical, artistic, archaeological, and touristic heritage of the state of São Paulo. Between 2004 and 2015, a comprehensive restoration was carried out, and the temple was reopened on February 8, 2015.

🏛️ Architecture

The temple was designed in the Baroque style, and Frei Joaquim do Monte Castelo is recognized as the main architect of its architectural configuration. Its approximate capacity of 500 people proved insufficient in the face of the growth of pilgrimage, which motivated the construction of the National Basilica in the 20th century. Among the elements of greatest heritage value is the niche where the original image of Nossa Senhora Aparecida was displayed before its transfer to the National Basilica in 1982. Pope Pius X enriched the interior with reliquaries containing bone fragments of Saint Vincent, a 4th-century Spanish martyr, along with a stone impregnated with his blood. The same pontiff donated processional liturgical symbols: a gonfalon in papal colors and a tintinnabulum with a bell, used in solemn processions. The nave preserves carved cedar wood ornamentation, characteristic of the construction period of the second half of the 19th century. The exterior facade presents the formal restraint typical of late Brazilian Baroque, while the interior accumulates devotional objects, votive paintings, and liturgical pieces of historical value gathered over three centuries.

⭐ Key Facts

The Historic Basilica is the first sanctuary dedicated in Brazil to Nossa Senhora Aparecida, venerated as the patron saint of the nation. Before the original image was transferred to the National Basilica in 1982, this temple concentrated the most important Marian pilgrimage of Brazilian Catholicism for nearly a century. On August 12, 1967, Pope Paul VI sent it a Golden Rose, a pontifical distinction reserved for places of special veneration. The liturgical feast on October 12 annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to the city of Aparecida, whose economy and identity are linked to Marian devotion. CONDEPHAAT inscribed the building as a historical heritage asset on April 18, 1982, a recognition that motivated the comprehensive restoration concluded in 2015. Today the temple, administered by the National Sanctuary, remains open for worship and receives daily visits from pilgrims from all over Brazil and other Latin American countries. Its value lies both in its architecture and in the role it played for nearly three centuries in the construction of Brazilian religious identity.

Those who visit Aparecida find in the Historic Basilica the point of origin of the most widespread Marian devotion in Brazil. The temple, restored and open to the public, preserves the memory of three centuries of faith: from the first chapel on Morro dos Coqueiros to the sanctuary that receives pilgrims from across the continent. Its Baroque architecture and documented history offer the visitor an experience that unites cultural heritage with the living religious tradition of São Paulo and Brazil.
